Latin American and U.S. trade unions to pay tribute to Fidel Castro this May 1st

by Ed Newman

On May 1st, unions from Latin America and the United States will pay tribute to Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro at the Anti-Imperialist Tribune in Havana, as part of the International Workers’ Day celebrations.

The main event not only seeks to commemorate the Cuban leader, but also to express rejection of the economic and energy blockade that has affected the island for more than half a century, on a day whose slogan is “The Homeland Must Be Defended.”

The international event will include the participation of union delegations and countries that maintain ties of solidarity with Cuba. This was confirmed by Osney Colina, president of the organizing committee of the Cuban Workers’ Federation Congress.

The activities will continue throughout the month of May.   On May 2, an international meeting will be held at the Havana Convention Center, where topics related to the labor movement and regional cooperation will be addressed.

Prior to May 1st and 2nd, between April 23rd and 28th, trade union delegations from Latin America and the United States will participate in a training program in Cuba, aimed at exchanging experiences on international trade unionism and strengthening cooperation.

Toward the end of April, social organizations and solidarity groups will hold an open forum against the blockade, which has been intensified since January by the Donald Trump administration.

With these activities, Cuba is preparing for a month of trade union and international mobilization, seeking to reaffirm workers’ unity and denounce the policies that affect the island’s economic and social life.
