Recovery of storage facility at Matanzas Supertanker Base progresses

by Ed Newman

The Cuba-Petroleum Union (Cupet) reported that the repair work at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, in western Cuba, is progressing steadily.   Currently, crews are carrying out welding and painting work on one of the storage facilities, tank number 34, with technical completion scheduled for next May.

The oil stored at these facilities is primarily used for domestic thermoelectric power plants.  Therefore, rehabilitating this storage capacity is vital to strengthening the island’s energy sovereignty.

The rehabilitation of this tank is part of a comprehensive reconstruction strategy that includes the construction of four new storage units in the Matanzas industrial zone.

At Tank 34 of the Matanzas Supertanker Base, welding and painting work is progressing. Its completion, scheduled for May, will increase crude oil storage capacity for electricity generation.

The project is not limited to the storage facilities, but also includes fourteen additional construction projects, among which the modernization of roads, the installation of new perimeter fences, and the optimization of interconnection systems stand out.

These actions respond to the need to recover the infrastructure lost after the disaster that occurred in August 2022. That event, classified as the largest industrial accident in the nation, caused the collapse of four storage structures and the loss of human lives.

A fundamental pillar in the execution of these works has been the technical and financial cooperation between the Governments of Cuba and China. The participation of specialists from the Asian country has been crucial for the assembly of these large structures, capable of holding hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of fuel.

Operational safety is the top priority in this new design. Unlike previous structures, the new tanks maintain greater physical separation between them to prevent the spread of incidents.

Advanced prevention technologies have also been incorporated, including state-of-the-art lightning protection systems and reinforced containment devices, meeting the most rigorous international standards required by Cuban authorities.

Finally, it is worth noting that these achievements in the industrial zone are attained in a complex environment due to the impact of the intensified economic, financial and commercial blockade by the United States.
