Teresa Regina de Ávila e Silva, mother of Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila—kidnapped and held in a Zionist prison—and of Luana de Ávila, vice president of the Federal District Civil Police Union (Sinpol-DF), passed away this Tuesday, May 5.
The news was confirmed by Sinpol-DF through its official social media accounts, where the organization expressed its condolences to the family. Those close to the deceased describe her as a woman of remarkable joy and great strength, whose life was dedicated to caring for her family.
Her death coincides with the arrest of her son in Israel, where he has been held since April 29. The anti-Zionist activist was illegally arrested in international waters near Greece while part of the Sumud Global Flotilla, a humanitarian mission seeking to break the blockade of the Gaza Strip. Israel accuses the Brazilian of “aiding the enemy,” a claim his defense denies, reaffirming the civilian nature of the expedition.
From his confinement, Thiago Ávila released a letter on Monday addressed to his daughter Teresa, explaining his absence from home and denouncing the humanitarian crisis in Palestine caused by the blockade and the Zionist extermination campaign.
In the letter, the activist highlights the impact of the Israeli occupation’s military actions on children. According to recent figures, since October 7, 2023, Tel Aviv’s aggression has resulted in the deaths of 72,615 Palestinians, nearly 20,000 of whom are minors, in addition to some 64,000 children wounded or maimed.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called Ávila’s continued imprisonment “unjustifiable” and an affront to international law.
Teresa Regina de Ávila was also the mother of Officer Luana de Ávila, who leads the vice presidency of the union that reported her death. At the time of this report, no details had been released regarding the wake or funeral arrangements for the Brazilian citizen.
