Havana, September 13 (RHC) – The New York Yankees will attempt today to narrow the gap with Tampa, the leaders of the East Division in Major League Baseball (MLB).
The Bronx team, currently sitting in second place in the East with an 85-63 record, will look to capitalize on home-field advantage and the support of the crowd at Yankee Stadium to secure a win against the New York Mets and close the gap with the Rays.
Yankees management, led by manager Aaron Boone, has named right-hander Cam Schlittler as the starting pitcher for the matchup, while Christian Scott will take the mound for the Mets.
In their most recent meeting yesterday at the “Bronx Bombers'” home ballpark, their city rivals defeated them 12-2; the win went to Zac Thornton, who pitched seven innings and allowed two runs.
Gerrit Cole took the loss after allowing five earned runs over four and one-third innings, during which he also surrendered nine hits—including three home runs—struck out four batters, and issued no walks.
Puerto Rican star Francisco Lindor led the offense, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and a single, while driving in five runs and scoring twice.
As the Major League season enters its final stretch heading into the playoffs, the New York Yankees will aim to overtake the Tampa Bay Rays—who have already clinched a postseason berth—for the top spot in the East.
