U.S. blockade is main cause of complex situation in Cuba

by Ed Newman

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reiterated that the intensification of the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade and the energy embargo decreed at the beginning of the year by that government are the cause of the difficult situation facing the island.

On his social network X, the foreign minister asserted that those who blame the Cuban government for this are the same ones who try to hide and manipulate these cruel effects.

“It is enough to see how the situation of the National Electrical System has improved with the arrival of a Russian oil tanker, a result of that nation’s solidarity and our efforts,” Bruno Rodríguez emphasized in his message, concluding: “So, is the blockade real or not?”

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), since December 8, when a ship carrying a partial cargo of fuel oil entered Cuba, the country practically stopped receiving supplies until the arrival of a Russian ship on March 31st.

From January 29 onward, acquisition possibilities were further restricted due to President Donald Trump’s executive order, which imposed sanctions on shipping companies and oil producers and intensified pressure on third countries capable of supplying fuel to Cuba.

Vicente de la O, head of Minem, described the impact of the so-called energy blockade on national life and the functioning of the electrical system as “brutal.”

He explained that, as a direct consequence of this situation, several power generation sources dependent on imported fuel, such as the Mariel and Moa plants and the barge in Havana, had to completely cease operations.
