United Nations warns that the arrival of winter will worsen crisis in Gaza

by Ed Newman

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) warned this Saturday about the danger that the arrival of winter poses for the population of Gaza.

“As winter approaches in Gaza, people increasingly need shelter and warmth,” the UN agency stated on the social media platform X, referring to the humanitarian crisis the territory is experiencing after two years of Israeli aggression.

UNRWA called on Israel, for the umpteenth time, to fully reopen border crossings to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to this coastal enclave, where more than 68,000 deaths have been reported as a result of the conflict.

Shelter materials and winter supplies for displaced families are in our warehouses in Jordan and Egypt, unable to enter, it emphasized.

It is necessary to restore humanitarian access to our teams, the organization emphasized, under attack from Israeli authorities, who passed several laws against it.

The UN, along with various NGOs and governments, accused Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on October 10 and included a substantial increase in aid to Gaza.

“Every day, or even every hour that we lose, is another life that will be lost,” Jonathan Fowler, communications director for UNRWA, warned a few days ago in an interview with the British BBC.

Half of Gaza’s population suffers from hunger, despite the truce reached, said this week the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri.

In statements to Al Jazeera television, the official noted that the food infrastructure in that coastal enclave must be rebuilt and emphasized that the situation in the north is dire.
