
National Women's Boxing Championship
Havana, May 7 (RHC) Ildamary Contreras (60 kg), from Villa Clara, starred today in the first big surprise with her 2-1 victory over the queen exponent Melissa Miyares (CFG), on the opening day of the National Women's Boxing Championship 2025 held at the Rafael Fortun multipurpose hall, in Camagüey.
Contreras, 22 years old and bronze in the last edition in +66 kilograms, set the pace of the fight, threw many more punches, and moved quickly in search of the short distance. Miyares looked exhausted in the final minutes.
Another surprise came from Yesi Oviedo (Camagüey, 57 kg), who defeated national team member Virginia Cobas (Santiago de Cuba) 2-1. She did not stop attacking, managed to close the exits of her most capable rival and always had her hand in front.
In addition, double silver medalist Diana Perez (Santiago de Cuba, 60 kg) showed her true worth and boxing ABC to win 3-0 against Maria Lahera (Artemisa). She showed her strong jab combined with several punches and deserved the unanimous verdict of the judges.
Seven of the eight winners secured the bronze medal. The Villaclareña Amanda Blanco (+66 kg), after her success against Claudia Linares (Artemisa) by RSC-2, in the round of 16, was in search of the bronze medal.
For Thursday, on the second day, a lineup of 11 bouts is expected, all in pursuit of bronze medals, with the presence of two of the three Cubans who attended for the first time a World Championship, held in the Serbian city of Nis.
They are Dayira Mesa (Santiago de Cuba, +66 kg), who will face Melany Ricardo (Mayabeque), and Havana's Yoana Rodriguez, who in a similar division will cross blows with Amanda Blanco (Villa Clara).
