Buenos Aires, May 11 (RHC)-- More than 40 social organizations mobilized this Friday in Argentina in defense of work and wages, and for an increase in the Complementary Social Salary to the level of the Minimum Wage.

The protest, which brought together more than 5,000 people, began in front of the Ministry of Labor, where the four main demands were heard: an increase in the Complementary Social Salary to the level of the Minimum Wage, an expansion of the program, the continuation of the Social Monotributo (Monotribute), and the immediate return of food to soup kitchens were the four central axes of the demands.

The demonstration took place amid a situation that, since Javier Milei's arrival at the Casa Rosada, has been characterized by a disproportionate security operation carried out by both the National and City Governments.

“Seventeen months after Milei's government took office, the data is alarming: hunger is growing, layoffs and unemployment are rising, and wages and pensions are plummeting. Informal, self-managed, and odd jobs are on the verge of collapse due to the drop in consumption and the complete shutdown of the economy,” the organizations organizing the protest stated.

According to Tiempo Argentino, the Complementary Social Salary, which stands at 78,000 pesos, “has been reduced to a pittance because the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello, decided to unlink it from the Minimum Living and Mobile Salary. Today, more than five million vulnerable people face a desperate situation,” the organizers insisted.

To this, Tiempo Argentino adds that “the social movements and picketers also pointed out that the government eliminated the social flat tax, which left more than a million people and their families without health coverage while discontinuing food deliveries to tens of thousands of soup kitchens.”

Meanwhile, the call states, among its goals, to highlight the problems faced by workers who maintain soup kitchens every day, work in recycling, provide shelter for people in vulnerable situations, defend our neighborhoods from the spread of drug trafficking, work on public roads, produce food, and boost the textile industry,” the text of the national day of protest emphasized.
