Mexican Labor Party denounces U.S. blockade of Cuba as unjust and ominous

by Ed Newman

The Labor Party (PT) has joined Mexico’s denunciation before the United Nations of “the unjust and ominous economic, commercial, and financial blockade” currently maintained by the United States against Cuba.

In a statement, the party expressed its support for the position of Mexico’s representative, Héctor Vasconcelos, during his intervention in Tuesday’s debate at the UN General Assembly on the need to end the blockade.

The party highlighted the ambassador’s speech, in which he “explained how these criminal and illegitimate actions endanger the lives of the Cuban people by denying access to essential health treatments and causing already alarming loss of life.”

The political group strongly condemned not only the measures implemented over the past 60 years, but also “the current policy of strangulation and energy blockade against the largest of the Antilles.”

Furthermore, the Labor Party categorically opposed the island’s exclusion from regional organizations and advocated for respect for the free self-determination of the Cuban people, “never accepting any kind of tutelage or pressure from abroad.”

It asserted that “the recent UN vote, where an overwhelming majority of 136 nations supported the urgent need to end this siege, is conclusive proof that the international community unequivocally rejects this economic aggression.”

The Mexican political party emphasized that Cuba is not a threat and called on the UN to assume its fundamental role in protecting human rights and global peace to immediately halt the situation and guarantee the full sovereignty of the Cuban people.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Vasconcelos reaffirmed Mexico’s historic stance against Washington’s blockade of Cuba and emphasized that only the Cuban people have the right to decide their destiny, free from external pressures and impositions.

He also characterized the blockade as contrary to international law, incompatible with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, contrary to peaceful coexistence among nations, and an obstacle to the development of Cuba.

The Mexican representative emphasized that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights warned last June that the recent restrictions and the tightening of extraterritorial sanctions are directly harming Cubans, especially the most vulnerable.

“When unilateral measures prevent timely access to medicines, delay thousands of surgeries, or limit the arrival of humanitarian aid, the impact ceases to be measured in mere numbers and begins to be measured in lives.”
