Tel Aviv, July 7 (RHC)-- Haunted by atrocities he witnessed — and took part in — during Israel’s wars of aggression agsint Gaza and Lebanon, Israeli soldier Daniel Edri took his own life after returning to the occupied territories.
Hebrew media report that Edri set himself on fire inside his car in the Biriya Forest near Safad, in the occupied Upper Galilee, on Friday.
He had been suffering from severe psychological trauma, according to the reports.
Edri’s mother told Walla news that her son was tormented by the “smell and sight of bodies,” and often said, “I can’t take it anymore.” He had served in both Gaza and Lebanon as part of the Israeli military, which says suicides have sharply risen since it started its war on Gaza in October 2023.
Ever since, the number of soldiers considering or threatening suicide has soared by 145%, according to official military statistics.
A recent Tel Aviv University study has also found that 12% of reservists who fought in Gaza suffer severe psychological disorders, and many are now deemed unfit for service.
The war in Gaza, now in its 21st month, has triggered mounting reports of atrocities, with human rights groups warning of mass civilian killings, attacks on hospitals and aid convoys, and systematic targeting of families.
UN investigators have uncovered mass graves near Gaza hospitals such as al-Shifa and Nasser, with bodies showing signs of execution — hands bound, stripped, and shot.
Israeli forces have so far killed over 57,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
