Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and Minister of Foreign Affairs, described the IV Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union, held in Colombia, as excellent and timely, according to the Presidency’s website.
The foreign minister noted that the discussions reflected the need for a more democratic and equitable international order, with respect for the sovereign equality of States and International Law.
The current US military threat against the region confirms the validity of the warning issued by the historical leader of the Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, in 1999, during the meeting that gave rise to the consultation mechanism, the head of Cuban diplomacy recalled.
He also stated that favorable initiatives were identified in the fight against drug trafficking and in cooperation against organized crime, issues of common interest to the European Union and CELAC.
According to the minister, these issues were included in the Final Declaration, although he considered that the text did not fully reflect the debate on the defense of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
During the sessions, meetings were held between Caribbean and European Union leaders, with the participation of Colombia, meetings that the minister described as productive due to the firmness of the regional positions.
Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized that the Caribbean representatives demanded reparations for the horrors of colonialism and slavery, as well as special and differentiated treatment in the international arena.
He also underscored the denunciation of unilateral coercive measures against developing countries and the demand for the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, an issue present in both meetings and reflected in the Final Declaration.
Salvador Valdés Mesa, a member of the Political Bureau and Vice President of the Republic, spoke at the sessions, and his words garnered recognition and respect, noted Rodríguez Parrilla, who considered that, despite their limitations, the meetings fulfilled their objectives and proved indispensable for regional political consensus.
