by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, December 3 (RHC) – Cuba will rely on 18 competitors in the wrestling tournament that serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.

Martín Torres, the national commissioner for this sport, commented that the event will be held from the 5th to the 7th of this month in Panama. The island nation has registered its six best men in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, as well as its six best women in freestyle.

The Greco-Roman team will be led by Luis Orta (67 kg), the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, who will be joined by Kevin de Armas (60 kg), Yoel Antomarchi (77 kg), Daniel Gregorich (87 kg), world champion Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg), and multi-medalist Oscar Pino (130 kg).

Among the freestyle wrestlers, Arturo Silot (97 kg) stands out, having won a gold medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador and participated in the Olympic Games in Paris.

Also on the team is Geannis Garzón (86 kg), bronze medalist at this year’s U23 World Championships in Novi Sad.

The squad is completed by Vladimir Vila (57 kg), Jean Carlos Olivero (65 kg), Orislandy Perdomo (74 kg), and Yosenki Castañeda (125 kg).

The women’s freestyle team is led by Olympic bronze medalist Milaimy Marín (76 kg) and Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), a two-time Junior Pan American Games champion and bronze medalist at the U23 World Championships in Novi Sad.

They will be joined by Greili Bencosme (50 kg), Laura Herín (53 kg), María Fernanda Santana (62 kg), and Brenda Elizabeth Sterling (68 kg).

The goal is for everyone to return with spots for a competition where that sport is expected to be one of the biggest contributors to the Cuban delegation’s medal count in next year’s regional contest.
