Group of Friends of the UN Charter condemns new U.S. sanctions against Cuba

by Ed Newman

The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations condemned the new measures announced by the United States government to tighten the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, through actions aimed at hindering oil supplies and sanctioning third-party states, according to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cubaminrex.

In a special statement, the Group of Friends rejected the intention to impose tariffs on products from countries that, in the legitimate exercise of their sovereignty, supply oil to Cuba, and described these measures as a deliberate attempt to strangle the island’s economy.

Due to its importance, Radio Havana Cuba reproduces the text in its entirety:

Special Statement from the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations in Rejection of the Latest Measures Announced by the Government of the United States to Further Tighten its Criminal Blockade Against the Republic of Cuba

1. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations strongly condemns the announcement by the Government of the United States of America of a new set of extreme measures aimed at further tightening the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed against the Republic of Cuba, through actions designed to obstruct the supply of oil to the country and sanction third-party states that maintain legitimate trade relations with Cuba.

2. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations categorically reject the declared intention of the Government of the United States of America to impose tariffs on products from countries that, in the legitimate exercise of their sovereignty, sell or supply oil to the Republic of Cuba. Such actions, based on a narrative built on falsehoods intended to portray the Republic of Cuba as a threat it does not pose, seek to deliberately strangle the Cuban economy and inflict further suffering on the Cuban people.

3. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations underscores that the use of blackmail, intimidation, and economic coercion to force other States to comply with unilateral policies, including through the threat or imposition of arbitrary and abusive tariffs, constitutes a flagrant violation of the norms of free trade, international law, and the Charter of the United Nations. Furthermore, such practices undermine the principles of sovereign equality, non-intervention in the internal affairs of States, and the right of peoples to self-determination.

4. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations recall that, for more than six decades, the Cuban people have been subjected to the longest and most cruel economic, commercial, and financial blockade ever imposed on any country. In this context, the recently announced measures are clearly intended to deliberately worsen the living conditions of the population and deprive the Republic of Cuba of essential resources, including energy supplies vital for economic activity and social welfare.

5. The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations notes that these measures also demonstrate that the attempt to present the blockade as a mere “bilateral trade embargo” is a distortion of reality that ignores its clearly extraterritorial reach and its profound impact on third countries and international economic relations.

6. The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations reiterate their unwavering solidarity with the people and Government of the Republic of Cuba and urge the international community to firmly condemn this act of aggression, reiterate the call of the United Nations General Assembly for the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba, and uphold international law, multilateralism, and respect for the Charter of the United Nations, in its entirety and in all its interconnectedness.
