Harsh U.S. policy against Cuba affects Americans

In New Delhi, Cuban diplomat José Ramón Cabañas says that the Cuban people are withstanding the severe impact of US aggression, which also affects the Cuban community in the United States and the American population.

In statements to Prensa Latina before concluding a visit to India to participate in the strategic Raisina Dialogue, held in Delhi from March 5 to 7, the director of the Center for International Policy Research (CIPI) described the impact on the Cuban population of the unprecedented intensification of Washington’s economic blockade policy as severe.

He noted that the Cuban government has taken measures such as reorganizing transportation, medical services, and education due to fuel shortages caused by Washington’s threats against countries that attempt to trade with Cuba.

He emphasized that the Caribbean nation has the capacity to adopt these necessary measures because it is a single country, a single nationality, and shares the common purpose of moving forward with its own strength.

“However, there is no doubt that the impact of Washington’s action is severe, and it adds to other previous actions that the U.S. administration had already been taking,” he reiterated.

Cabañas added that it also affects a large portion of the U.S. population, as it hinders scientific exchange in the areas of health and education, with potential benefits for citizens of the northern nation as well.

Regarding claims from Washington about alleged negotiations with Havana in exchange for certain concessions, the diplomat emphasized that Cuba will be ready to negotiate with the United States, always based on respect, equality, and symmetrical decisions.

He recalled, as a reference, the negotiation process between the two countries from 2015 to 2017, which resulted in the signing of 22 mutually beneficial memoranda of understanding.

Cabañas recalled that these mechanisms were maintained during the first two years of Donald Trump’s first term, in 2017 and 2018, and the main results were seen during that period.

There was an increase in travel in both directions by millions of people, and a series of important steps were taken regarding law enforcement, including the virtual elimination of illegal or undocumented migration from Cuba to the United States, the Cuban diplomat explained.

He emphasized that a number of tangible results were achieved from that negotiation process, which was interrupted when Washington’s priority shifted to attacking the Venezuelan people.

“When the Lima Group was created and everything related to Juan Guaidó was planned, that’s when the situation with Cuba changed,” he noted.
