Havana, May 13 (RHC) – Industriales de La Habana defeated the Cachorros de Holguín 2-0 today at the Calixto García stadium and consolidated their dominance in the IV Elite League of Cuban Baseball, on a day marked by rain.
Like someone patiently crafting a victory, the azules painstakingly wove their triumph from the third inning onward, when Roberto Álvarez opened the scoring with a single and Jonathan Bridón converted it with a timely hit.
Álvarez himself, who became the star of the afternoon at the plate, punished the opposing team again in the fifth inning with a solo home run off a pitch from José Luis Braña, extending a lead that never seemed in danger.
On the mound, Rafael Orlando Perdomo pitched with the composure of someone who knows the game, delivering seven flawless innings in which he scattered just three hits, issued no walks, and struck out ten batters, including four consecutive strikeouts that silenced the opposing bats.
Holguín, trapped in an offensive slump, was unable to decipher the language of the Havana pitching staff, while relievers Jesús Quintán and Frank Navarro contained the damage without any support from a lineup that floundered amid harmless hits.
The closing innings fell to Fernando Betanzo, who secured the final two scoreless innings with the help of a defense that has become a constant wall, confirming Industriales as the most solid team in the tournament in that regard.
The day, however, was marred by rain, which fell relentlessly at the 26 de Julio Stadium as Matanzas was already scoring against Artemisa, and at the Nelson Fernández Stadium, where Mayabeque was dominating Las Tunas before the suspension.
Both games were rescheduled for Thursday morning, with resumptions at 10:00 AM local time, followed by the completion of the scheduled seven-inning games.
In the standings, Industriales consolidates its position at the top with a 7-3 record, followed by Artemisa and Las Tunas with 5-4, while Holguín is tied at 5-5, Matanzas has a 4-5 record, and Mayabeque closes with 2-7 in a championship that is beginning to define hierarchies.
