Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Cuba’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, denounced on Thursday at the Disarmament Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, the threat of a direct military attack against the island by the United States, the Cuban Mission in Geneva reported on its Facebook page.
The Cuban diplomat stated that an attack would violate the UN Charter and International Law, and would cause serious human losses in both Cuba and the United States.
Benítez pointed out that the US government has intensified the economic, commercial, and financial blockade with additional sanctions and an energy embargo that, since January 29, has prevented the entry of fuel, equivalent to a naval blockade.
He explained that the measures have led to power outages, difficulties in the supply of water and gas, disruptions in food production and medical services, as well as an increase in infant mortality and a reduction in the life expectancy of children with cancer.
The ambassador described the filing of criminal charges against the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, as arbitrary and considered it an attempt to justify military action.
He reiterated Cuba’s willingness to hold bilateral talks without interference in its internal affairs and called on the international community to prevent an aggression that would have unpredictable consequences.
Rodolfo Benítez called for solidarity with Cuba in the face of the fuel blockade and military threats, and assured that the Cuban people will defend their sovereignty and independence to the very end.
