Havana, May 29 (RHC) – The rumors became true within a week: Anthony Gordon is FC Barcelona’s new signing.
Worth 70 million euros, Newcastle’s former left winger is expected to join Hansi Flick’s plan to bring the sixth UEFA Champions League Cup to Barcelona’s headquarters.
The 25-year-old had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, but ultimately opted for the Spanish champions, against whom he featured three times in last season’s Champions League.
Gordon’s departure comes despite having four years remaining on a new long-term deal signed with Newcastle in 2024. He was a key figure in head coach Eddie Howe’s efforts to inject dynamism into the frontline, forming a notable partnership with Alexander Isak, who himself made a controversial £130m switch to Liverpool last summer.
Gordon played a pivotal role in Newcastle ending their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy in last season’s Carabao Cup final and securing a second Champions League campaign in three seasons.
His impressive tally of 10 goals in Europe this season, five of which were from the penalty spot, brought his talent to a wider audience. He will now turn his immediate attention to England’s World Cup finals campaign before embarking on his new challenge in LaLiga.
At a presentation in Barcelona’s headquarters, Gordon said he is proud to join Barcelona’s team and that he is aware of the responsibility of being a member of that club.
