U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated last Thursday that there are people in key sectors of American society—including professors and officials—who sympathize with Cuba, and he again described the island as a “security threat” to Washington.
According to the head of U.S. diplomacy, this sympathy has diverse motivations. “Part of it is motivated by their anti-Americanism and part by ideological affinity,” he stated. The Secretary of State emphasized that there are enough people in key sectors of American society, including professors, and that in the past, people within the government itself have been seen to sympathize with the island.
In this context, the official again presented Cuba as a “security threat” to the U.S. that, he said, cannot be ignored.
Washington has maintained an economic and commercial embargo against Cuba for more than six decades. Since Trump assumed his second term in January 2015, the U.S. administration has tightened its measures to strangle the island.
This extraterritorial policy has been accompanied by serious threats, with Trump even stating his willingness to use force, if necessary, to overthrow the Cuban government, which, for its part, denounces these actions as “genocide.”
The Trump administration, which maintains an active military deployment in the Caribbean with troops from the U.S. Southern Command, has repeatedly admitted that its objective is to prevent Havana from receiving any kind of economic income and even to block the supply of oil, key to the country’s energy needs.
The situation is severely impacting the island’s economy, which in recent months has suffered the effects of a multidimensional blockade reinforced by numerous coercive measures from the White House, and is jeopardizing essential services such as fuel, electricity, healthcare, education, transportation, food, and tourism.
