Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, questioned the United States’ expressed fear of the island on Thursday via his Facebook profile, stating that it is incongruous to consider Cuba a threat given Washington’s military and intelligence capabilities.
“The US has 5,200 nuclear warheads, some 11 active aircraft carriers, the most widespread and best-funded espionage and covert operations agency in the world, military bases everywhere, yet its State Department considers Cuba a potential threat. Is this fear real?” the official asked in his online post.
In a previous message, Fernández de Cossío recalled the nefarious role of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in actions against Cuba, widely documented in U.S. government archives and in investigations by the federal Congress.
The Church Commission revealed in the 1970s plans for assassinations, economic and technological sabotage, infiltration by armed groups, and links to organized crime, among other acts.
The deputy foreign minister pointed out that these practices included bacteriological warfare and campaigns of defamation and disinformation against Cuba, which continued in subsequent years.
“Committing crimes against Cuba and its people with a leading role for the CIA has been and is official policy of the United States government,” he stated in the other message.
Fernández de Cossío added that recent articles in media outlets such as Politico and The New York Times confirm the continued existence of this hostile policy, through intelligence operations and the creation of special groups to pressure for political changes on the island.
Both reports demonstrate the continuity of a Washington strategy that combines espionage, disinformation campaigns, and covert actions against Cuba.
