Havana, August 7 (RHC) – The Cuban women’s handball team retained their crown from the last edition in Santo Domingo 2026 by beating the hosts 35-15 in the final.
At the sports pavilion in Parque del Este, the Cuban women’s volleyball team dominated the first quarter 12-8, relying on an effective attack and solid defense, which they improved upon to secure a resounding 23-9 victory in the second.
The large home crowd filled the arena and cheered on their team from before the game even started, but the Cuban players never deviated from their game plan or let up their attacking intent across the board.
Gleinys Reyes and Zajaris Hernández led Cuba’s offense, each scoring four goals.
For the host team, Yojaver Brito also scored four goals, while Mariel Andino added three.
The gold medalists secured their place at the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
They began in Group B with a 32-23 victory over Venezuela, followed by a 36-23 win against Costa Rica, and finished with a 37-23 victory over Mexico.
In a thrilling semifinal match, they edged out Puerto Rico by a single goal, 29-28.
This victory secured their fifth regional title, following wins in 1993, 2006, 2014, and 2023.
Mexico took the bronze medal with a 32-28 victory over Puerto Rico, while Venezuela finished fifth with a 26-18 win against Guatemala.
The Cuban delegation has accumulated 133 medals (42 gold, 40 silver, and 51 bronze) and currently sits in third place, behind Mexico (151-101-98) and Colombia (77-86-73).
