Díaz-Canel backs Cuba’s firm response to U.S. provocation

by Ed Newman

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel praised today the firm stance taken by the island’s delegation at the United Nations in the face of what he described as pressure, lies, and disrespect from the United States.

In messages posted on the social media platform X, the president expressed his appreciation for Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón, and the other members of the Cuban delegation during the debate on the resolution demanding an end to the blockade.

“Cuba will not back down — certainly not in the face of Yankee pressure and orders,” stated Díaz-Canel, who highlighted the attitude displayed by the island’s representatives in response to what he characterized as imperial arrogance and overbearing behavior.

The head of state further emphasized that the United Nations is a space for sovereign equality among states, affirming that Cuba will always defend the rights granted to it by the organization’s Charter and regulations, as well as the dignity of its people and its heroes.

The president’s remarks followed an incident that occurred during a session of the General Assembly dedicated to the annual review of the Cuban resolution against the U.S. blockade.

During the remarks of U.S. representative Mike Waltz, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez interrupted the speech to denounce what he described as a presentation filled with slanders, distortions, and lies directed at Cuba.

“You are lying,” Rodríguez declared, demanding that the Assembly’s presiding officer call the U.S. representative to order. The Cuban foreign minister also denounced the pressure exerted by Washington on UN member states and rejected what he termed an affront to the dignity of the Cuban people and to the General Assembly itself.

The Cuban delegation’s protest came at the start of the debate on a resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” — an initiative that, for more than three decades, has received broad support from the international community.

On the eve of the vote, Cuba denounced an intense campaign of diplomatic pressure aimed at influencing governments and delegations to limit support for the resolution.

Cuban authorities have maintained that the tightening of the blockade — particularly since 2025 — has caused severe economic and social harm, even as the international community once again speaks out at the United Nations against a policy that has been repeatedly rejected by the majority of member states.
