Prominent journalist and researcher Víctor Francisco Pérez-Galdós Ortiz (1945–2026) passed away this Friday at the age of 81. The news was reported by several media outlets, including the radio station Radio Progreso, to which he dedicated some of the most prolific years of his professional career.
Born in Cienfuegos, he devoted his life to journalism, beginning with his enrollment in the School of Journalism at the University of Havana in 1968. He also collaborated with stations such as Radio Habana Cuba and Radio Taíno, gaining distinction for his research on José Martí and Che Guevara.
His accolades include the José Martí National Journalism Award, the Historical Journalism Award (2023), the Juan Gualberto Gómez National Journalism Award (1998), and a national award at the Radio Festival (1988). These honors reflect his extensive service to the profession, complemented by his work as a scriptwriter, sound producer, broadcaster and author.
Works such as *Joseito Fernández y su Guajira guantanamera* (Editora Política, 1999), *Un hombre que actúa como piensa* (Editora Política, 1987), and *Cien momentos en la vida de Camilo Cienfuegos* (Editorial Pablo de la Torriente, 1999) earned him significant recognition among readers.
The Cuban News Agency (ACN) — which he helped found and served as deputy director from 1974 to 1987 (when it was known as the National Information Agency, or AIN) — extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.
