World Academy of Sciences honors Cuban scientist

by Ed Newman

The Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) announced that Dr. Tania Crombet Ramos has been selected for the 2027 TWAS Medal Lecture — a highly distinguished recognition of her brilliant scientific career.

The TWAS Medal Lecture is an honorary distinction awarded by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) to some of its most prominent members, the institution noted on its official Facebook page.

It added that the award recognizes a scientist’s outstanding achievements within their field of research.

Crombet Ramos serves as the Director of Clinical Research at the CIM and is a Full Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. In 2025, she was elected as a member of TWAS—an organization founded in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, which promotes sustainable prosperity through research, education, public policy, and diplomacy.

According to official statistics, the Academy comprises over 1,400 elected members from 112 countries — including 13 Nobel laureates — along with more than 430 young affiliates and alumni, forming an active network of some of the most distinguished early-career researchers from the Global South.

Together with its partners, the Academy has trained more than 1,100 PhDs and awarded over 2,300 postdoctoral fellowships to scientists from developing nations.

Since its inception, the organization has benefited from the essential support of Italian scientists and political leaders; it currently operates as a programmatic unit of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
