Cuban foreign minister highlights scientific advance despite energy blockade

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez highlighted on Monday that Cuban science is developing the HEBERSaVax vaccine candidate, the only one of its kind in the world against cancer, despite the intensification of Washington’s policy of strangulation.

In a message posted on the social network X, the island’s foreign minister emphasized that “preserving the right to life is the primary task of the Cuban State and Government.”

“While the US policy of strangulation and economic warfare intensifies and seeks to limit the entry of supplies into the country as much as possible, especially those destined for health, Cuban science continues to design and create products that provide us with greater well-being and sovereignty,” Rodríguez noted.

The top Cuban diplomat affirmed that, faced with this criminal imperialist policy, the island responds “with greater determination, resistance, creativity, and independence.”

According to researchers on the island, HEBERSaVax is a “therapeutic vaccine” or “active immunotherapy” that targets the ways in which the tumor feeds and triggers cellular responses that halt its growth.

The product “produces specific antibodies” that cut off blood flow to the tumor, while simultaneously restoring the individual’s ability to fight the cancer with an immune response.

Cuba is experiencing a complex situation, exacerbated since January 29, 2016, when President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on countries that supply oil to the island.

This energy embargo affects transportation, electricity generation, healthcare services, and food security for the population.
