The Cuban ambassador to Austria, Pablo Berti Oliva, denounced before the Board of Governors of the the intensification of the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade and the energy embargo, including its effects on the care of cancer patients, especially children.
According to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Cubaminrex, the diplomat rejected Cuba’s inclusion on the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism and the executive orders of January 29 and May 1, 2026, while also warning about power outages, the lack of spare parts for medical equipment, and the disruptions to the production of radiopharmaceuticals, which have an extremely short shelf life.
Berti Oliva emphasized that these limitations seriously compromise medical care, despite the efforts of the Cuban government and healthcare personnel to mitigate the consequences.
He urged the IAEA to speak out against the coercive measures that threaten the human right to health and development and that violate the right of all states to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The IAEA, established in 1957 as an autonomous agency within the United Nations system and headquartered in Vienna, has the mission of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and ensuring that nuclear materials are not used for military purposes.
With more than 170 member states, it promotes applications in electricity generation, medicine, agriculture, and industry, under strict safety standards.
