An emotional performance at the José Jacinto Milanés Theater in Pinar del Rio was a cultural tribute to the 73rd anniversary of the attack on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, presided over by Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic.
Directed by Dorys Méndez, the evening, titled “Voices of the People,” became a song to memory, art and national identity, with a cast comprised entirely of residents of Pinar del Río.
Music, dance, and poems paid tribute to the homeland and sovereignty for which a group of young people decided to fight in 1953. Although it was a military defeat, it ignited a flame throughout the country that the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship could not extinguish.
Trova, bolero, and son were enjoyed by the attendees, among them members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee: Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and of the Council of State; Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of the Republic; Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee; Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Teresa Amarelle Boué, Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Women.
Also present were Commander of the Rebel Army José Ramón Machado Ventura, and other political and governmental authorities.
Vocal Universo, the Arsis saxophone quintet, soloist Ana Cristina Pozo, among others, and recitations by young actors from Vueltabajo were featured in the cast of this quintessentially Cuban show.
Pinar del Río is a land of farmers, artists, and workers who strive daily to get ahead, and this gala also served as a tribute to them, who made the province worthy of hosting the main activities for July 26th.
That morning of Santa Ana, with Fidel Castro at the helm, that group changed the course of the nation, guided by the ideals of José Martí.
And the “José Jacinto Milanés” theater, one of the oldest in Latin America, was the chosen venue to honor history and its protagonists, following the most extensive renovation of the last decade.
