Havana, October 26 (RHC) – Julio César Chivás lost 2-3 in the semifinals and will return home with a bronze medal, the only achievement of Cuba at the Budva 2026 World Junior Boxing Championships.
The fight began with a 0-5 first round against him, a consequence of his shaky performance and disregard for the strategists’ instructions.
Coach Michel Lugo reported from the venue that the young man from Isla de la Juventud rallied in the following round, though not all the judges deemed it sufficient, resulting in a 4-1 score.
He added that Chivás maintained a good pace at the start of the final round, but then lost momentum, an opening his opponent exploited to secure a 3-2 victory.
This outcome marked Isla de la Juventud’s exit from the competition, following the earlier losses of Iverson Acosta (55 kg) and the women Liyanet Benítez (54 kg) and Yenisel Durruty (57 kg), their first representatives in such events.
Although the small number of participants represents a significant difference compared to previous appearances, this is the only time Isla de la Juventud has failed to reach the finals in these tournaments.
