Cuba denounces impact of blockade on energy transition at the United Nations

by Ed Newman

The impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, aggravated by a criminal energy embargo, was denounced by Ernesto Soberón, the Caribbean nation’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

At a side event of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), entitled “Accelerating Innovation and the Transition of Energy Systems for Equity and Resilience in Support of Global Sustainable Development,” the diplomat reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to a just, inclusive, and multilateral energy transition.

Soberón stressed that access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is essential for implementing the 2030 Agenda, as it impacts poverty eradication, food security, industrialization, and the provision of quality health and education services.

The diplomat emphasized that the global energy transition must be based on equity, respect for the sovereign rights of each state, and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Cuba’s representative to the United Nations added that developing countries require predictable financing, access to affordable technologies, and capacity building.

In this context, he denounced unilateral coercive measures that undermine energy security and the development prospects of numerous countries.

He reiterated that the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, intensified through an energy embargo, hinders the national transition and limits the fulfillment of the commitments of the 2030 Agenda.

The island’s UN ambassador maintained that such actions contradict the purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the principle of leaving no one behind.

He affirmed that, despite the restrictions, Cuba remains determined to diversify its energy matrix, expand renewable energy sources, and promote international cooperation.

In closing, Ernesto Soberon reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism and building a more representative and inclusive global governance that responds to the development aspirations of countries in the Global South.
