Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced on Monday that Latin America and the Caribbean are the target of a push by the United States government aimed at imposing the archaic Monroe Doctrine, reinforced by new and unacceptable corollaries.
During a ministerial meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held in the context of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA81), Bruno Rodríguez stated that this constitutes “our main concern and key issue to denounce today.”
The militarization of the region—warned the head of the Cuban delegation to the High-Level segment at UN headquarters—is being used as an instrument of domination under the pretext of the fight against terrorism.
“Punitive tariffs are being imposed against several of our countries,” emphasized Rodríguez, who is also a deputy to the National Assembly and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba. He added that “initiatives are being promoted in an attempt to divide us” and that “efforts are being made to weaken the coordination and integration mechanisms we built with such great effort.”
The Cuban foreign minister stressed that “defending the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace is a priority.”
“We denounce the unprecedented tightening of the United States blockade against Cuba, particularly the energy blockade, secondary sanctions, a vicious media campaign, and the threat of military aggression,” he concluded.
As part of his parallel agenda here, Bruno Rodríguez participated on Saturday in the National Meeting of Cubans Residing in the United States, where he highlighted the significant work undertaken by the island to foster greater connection and integration into national life for “compatriots residing or staying for extended periods outside Cuba, and their descendants.”
At the meeting — held in New York City at the Cuban Mission to the United Nations — the foreign minister reiterated that the United States is intensifying its aggression against Cuba, the collective punishment inflicted upon the Cuban people, and the ruthless impact this is having on families and the general population.
There is no way to justify such a cruel crime, concluded the top Cuban diplomat.
