Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez highlighted on Tuesday, June 16, the launch of the second phase of the 65th National Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign. The island’s foreign minister affirmed that this process demonstrates the unwavering determination of the island’s government to provide health and well-being to the population, especially children, guaranteeing their fundamental right to life and health.
Cuba’s foreign minister denounced that, while the country is making progress in its healthcare programs, the United States government continues to strangle the nation under false pretenses. Rodríguez directly pointed to the impact of the fuel embargo, which is essential to ensure the transport of medicines and to maintain active refrigeration chains.
The energy crisis, a product of the U.S. oil blockade, is causing severe logistical problems throughout the country. Previously, the Cuban foreign minister reported that the fuel shortage is preventing the nationwide distribution of approximately 50% of the medicines produced in Cuba in recent months.
On January 29 of this year, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing an energy blockade by threatening tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to the island, leading to fuel shortages in Cuba.
The US aggression was recently reinforced with sanctions against the state-owned company Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), a strangling measure aimed at restricting the island’s energy operations.
Despite the current limitations, Cuba is not stopping. The pharmaceutical sector recently reported the reactivation of production in the country of 16 cytostatic drugs destined for the National Program for the Care of Cancer Patients.
The foreign minister stated that this achievement, attained after a significant investment process at the AICA laboratories’ cytostatic plant, demonstrates the state’s commitment to continue working for the well-being of its citizens, with each drug produced representing a symbol of sovereignty and hope.
