Cuba thanks European Left for support against U.S. blockade

by Ed Newman

Cuba has thanked the European Left party for its support of a recent resolution condemning the blockade imposed on the island nation by the United States government.

The document recognizes the serious damage caused to the Cuban people by the intensification of the blockade and the current energy embargo, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla stated on social media.

Cuba’s foreign minister also emphasized that the political group, which unites democratic parties of the alternative and progressive left in Europe, also called for an end to the threats from the US government against Cuba.

Solidarity and reason are with our country. We know that we are not and will not be alone, Bruno Rodríguez affirmed.

During its eighth congress, held on April 17-18 in Belgium, the European Left emphasized in its resolution Washington’s intention to stifle Cuba’s economic and social life.

They warned that the actions of the US government have direct consequences on the daily lives of millions of people, affect the energy system, limit production, hinder the functioning of basic services, and erode the Caribbean nation’s capacity for development.

Consequently, the European Left party demanded the immediate lifting of the blockade and the repeal of all measures that prevent Cuba from trading freely, accessing energy resources, and maintaining normal economic relations with countries that wish to do so.

They also urged the European Union and the international community to adopt a firm stance, rejecting the extraterritorial application of US sanctions, to ensure that Cuba can receive oil and other essential supplies.
