Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, highlighted on his Facebook profile this Wednesday the conversation he had with Roger Waters, bassist and co-founder of the legendary band Pink Floyd.
The Cuban diplomat explained that the musician shared his views on Cuba, the Cuban people, and U.S. policy toward the island, in an exchange broadcast via a reel on the Facebook digital platform.
Waters expressed: “We thank the Cuban people for everything they have done for the world since the Revolution,” referring to the Caribbean nation’s contributions in various international arenas.
Soberón Guzmán affirmed that Cuba has insisted on maintaining a dialogue with U.S. authorities, considering that there are multiple possible areas of cooperation between the two countries.
The ambassador pointed out that, despite the differences, it is viable to establish a bilateral agenda, promote collaboration in various arenas, and peacefully address disagreements, in the context of the 67th anniversary of the Revolution.
“There is no reason for this collective punishment that the Cuban people are suffering right now,” the diplomat emphasized in relation to the intensification of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington, and the latest restrictive measures aggravated by the energy embargo.
Waters added that the conversation should not be understood as an exchange between political leaders, but as a dialogue between the people of Cuba and the United States, insisting on the need for empathy and mutual solidarity.
The musician described the prolonged conflict between the United States and Cuba since the 1950s as absurd and defended the right of the Cuban people to organize themselves and decide their destiny without foreign interference.
The interaction between Soberón Guzmán and Waters is part of Cuban diplomacy’s efforts to promote understanding and cooperation with the United States, as well as the trajectory of the British artist, recognized for his political activism.
