Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío denounced that the United States is funding press articles to justify a military aggression against Cuba, amidst military movements in Puerto Rico.
In a message posted on social media, the diplomat noted that “the hot news is the military movements and maneuvers in Puerto Rico,” but warned that none of these articles contain “any reflection on the legality of a criminal act such as the one being promoted.”
Fernández de Cossío criticized the fact that the articles omit any mention of a possible excuse to justify the aggression, the damage it would cause in lives and destruction, the scenario of regional instability it would generate, and, “much less, the profoundly immoral nature of the intention.”
The deputy foreign minister denounced that the U.S. government is complementing this campaign with “opinion pieces written by hired liars,” whose task is to inflate “the fallacy that Cuba constitutes or could constitute a threat against the U.S.”
He emphasized that this assertion is absurd in the face of Washington’s military might: the world’s largest nuclear power, with 5,200 nuclear warheads, 11 aircraft carriers, military bases or presence throughout the hemisphere, and powerful intelligence agencies.
Fernández de Cossío also noted that Washington has “the capacity to economically and commercially intimidate almost any country,” which makes the claim of portraying Cuba as a threat even more ridiculous.
The deputy foreign minister concluded that the U.S. media campaign seeks “to convince the public of the inevitability, natural materialization, and eventual execution of a military aggression against Cuba,” and warned of the danger posed by this escalating propaganda.
