Cuban Women Climb the Rankings at the 46th World Chess Olympiad

In the women’s tournament, the Cuban team secured a 2.5–1.5 victory over Montenegro, allowing them to climb to 27th place in the overall standings.

Yerisbel Miranda and Roxángel Obregón claimed the wins. Ineymig Hernández added half a point with a draw, while Maritza Arribas suffered a defeat on the top board.

Meanwhile, the men’s team drew 2–2 against Chinese Taipei; all four matches—played by Jorge Roberto Elías, Dylan Berdayes, Lelys Martínez, and Ermes Espinosa—ended in draws.

That result caused them to drop to 67th place in the standings.

The competition takes a rest day today before resuming tomorrow with the seventh round: the Cuban women will face Serbia, and the men will take on Egypt.

Following these results, the Cuban women’s team has regained ground in the overall rankings and kept their hopes of climbing the leaderboard alive for the second half of the tournament, while the men’s team will look to get back to winning ways against Egypt to improve their standing.

So far, Uzbekistan, China, and Armenia are vying for the top spot in the open tournament (in that order), while China, Kazakhstan, and India are leading the women’s division.
