The Máximo Gómez Association of Cubans Residing in the Dominican Republic has condemned the Dominican government’s decision to expel 10 members of the Cuban Embassy in Santo Domingo, as well as their families.
The group endorsed the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, which rejects this action as unjustified and denounces its true political motivations.
The Association considered the measure a response to external pressures seeking to damage relations between the two countries and reproduced excerpts from that country’s statement, which recalled precedents such as the island’s exclusion from the Summit of the Americas, the Dominican Republic’s change of vote at the UN on the embargo, and now the withdrawal of diplomats.
It pointed out that the ties between the two peoples are not broken by political measures and emphasized that the two nations share a common history, forged in the struggles for independence.
“We are Cubans residing in the Dominican Republic. We respect its laws, we love its people, and we contribute to the development of this nation that has opened its doors to us,” it stated.
“Precisely because of this love and respect, we believe that this decision does not represent the best of Dominican sentiment. The Dominican Republic is a noble, supportive, and Caribbean people, and it does not deserve to be dragged into conflicts foreign to its history and its commitment to brotherhood.”
The organization called on Dominican society and the peoples of the Caribbean, as well as social, cultural and community organizations, churches, human rights organizations, universities and think tanks, in addition to democratic and solidarity sectors, to reject the expulsion and demand that the Dominican Government rectify its position.
