Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, led Party visits this past Wednesday to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) and its higher-level business management organizations, as part of the process of economic and social transformations.
According to sources from the Presidency, at MINEM headquarters, the leader spoke with Party members and executives from the Electric Union (UNE), the CubaPetróleo Union (Cupet), and the Geomineral-Salt Business Group (Geominsal). He was accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Organization Secretary of the PCC Central Committee, and Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister.
Díaz-Canel emphasized that the transformations must be correctly understood and implemented to achieve structural changes in the country, noting that the visits were not intended as an inspection, but rather as an exchange with the Party membership and the workforce.
Rubén Campos Olmo, Director General of UNE, explained that the entity would continue to serve as the governing body of the National Electric Power System and highlighted the need to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, as well as to ensure investments and maintenance programs.
During the meeting with Cupet, the President denounced the impact of the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba—exacerbated by the energy blockade and coercive measures—describing it as “genocide.”
He also acknowledged the innovation and effort shown by workers in facing these difficulties.
Geominsal executives outlined actions to identify and implement the transformations, emphasizing worker participation and accountability as essential elements. Vicente de la O Levy, Minister of Energy and Mines, shared reflections on the agency’s challenges and the importance of the energy transition as a strategic priority.
Morales Ojeda emphasized that these changes must result in the well-being of the people.
More than 240 Party members from the energy sector participated in the wrap-up meeting, where young people and workers shared experiences regarding energy transition projects and community support.
President Díaz-Canel called upon every member to play a vanguard role in the current landscape.
