Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío has reiterated that the intensification of the United States blockade is aimed at inflicting severe harm on the island’s population.
“When it cynically claims that its aggression against Cuba targets only state revenue, it seeks to hide the fact that its onslaught is actually directed precisely against those state obligations and, consequently, against the well-being of the entire population,” the deputy foreign minister wrote on Facebook.
Fernández de Cossío listed the main sectors affected by the intensification of Washington’s blockade against the island, including education, municipal services, public transport, water supply, electricity service, and subsidized food.
Washington “pretends not to know where the funding comes from in any country to cover public education, public health, municipal services, public transport, social services for the most vulnerable, subsidized water supply,” and other areas, the official explained.
In this vein, he asserted that “the punishment inflicted by this economic war is collective.”
Fernández de Cossío also participated in a meeting in Mexico with more than a dozen lawmakers from the Mexico-Cuba Friendship Group, before whom he denounced the United States’ policy of pressure against the island and its effects on the Cuban population.
During the meeting, the deputy foreign minister reaffirmed the Cuban government’s willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington on the basis of sovereignty and expressed gratitude for Mexico’s solidarity, while the lawmakers pledged to maintain and strengthen their support for the people of Cuba.
