Havana, September 18 (RHC) – Cuban pitcher Raidel Martinez notched his fifth win of the season today, after completing a flawless inning in the Yomiuri Giants’ 2-0 victory over the Chunichi Dragons in Japanese baseball.
A specialist closer, Martínez preserved the scoreless tie in the ninth inning with two strikeouts, and then his team walked off with two runs in the majestic Tokyo Dome.
The lanky pitcher, originally from Pinar del Río in western Cuba, boasts a record of five wins and four losses this season, but his best statistic is leading the Central League in saves with 39.
This week, Martínez reached 250 career saves, earning him a place in the Meikyukai, an exclusive club of extraordinary players in Japanese baseball.
This season, the Cuban has pitched 49 innings, allowing seven earned runs, posting a 1.29 ERA, with 53 strikeouts and 11 walks.
