Marches and events in Spain for Cuba’s July 26th celebrations

by Ed Newman

Various Spanish cities celebrated Cuba’s National Rebellion Day with marches and commemorative events, conveying a message of rejection of the United States blockade.

The State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) of Madrid held its traditional July 26th demonstration, which this year carried the slogan: “Siempre es 26. It’s always the 26th. The struggle continues.”

They also made a clear call: “Break the blockade. Cuba needs energy,” alluding to the energy and economic blockade imposed by the White House against the Caribbean island.

The march in Madrid proceeded from the Atocha roundabout to the Plaza de la Provincia, in the heart of Madrid, to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks.

The organizers focused on the daily impact of the sanctions and the US oil embargo on the Cuban population, as well as the urgent need to intensify solidarity campaigns from Spain.

The initiative was supported by the State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC), the “It’s Time, Let’s Break the Blockade Against Cuba” campaign, and numerous solidarity groups, which garnered a large turnout in the streets of Madrid.

Among the attendees was José Luis García de Mingo, from the July 26 Collective of the Spanish capital, who was awarded the Order of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) that very day.

Meanwhile, at the invitation of the Francisco Villamil Galician-Cuban Friendship Association, numerous people gathered at the statue of José Martí in Vigo to commemorate Cuba’s National Rebellion Day.

In Seville and other Spanish cities, July 26th was highlighted in various gatherings organized by solidarity groups.
