Numerous solidarity campaigns with Cuba are underway in the Basque Country, northern Spain, where unions, political parties, politicians, NGOs, and Basque associations are maintaining their momentum.
The Euskadi-Cuba association stands out as a central organizing body, providing infrastructure, storage facilities, and transportation routes, as well as covering the shipping costs for containers of aid to the Caribbean island.
According to José Manzaneda, coordinator of Cubainformación, the results of the “Argia eta Indarra Kubarentzat” campaign were presented on May 30. The “Against the Blockade, Energy for Cuba” campaign raised €245,000 to purchase solar energy installations for health centers on the island.
In May and June, collections of various materials have been underway, primarily hygiene and sanitation supplies and food, but also educational, sports, and other types of materials.
The campaigns in the Basque Country were spearheaded by unions such as ELA and Comisiones Obreras-Euskadi, as well as by political organizations including Podemos, EHKS/GKS/IAS, Ezker Anitza-IU/PCE-EPK, and Sortu/EH Bildu.
Meanwhile, the internationalist platform Hegoak, which brings together some twenty unions and associations, carried out a joint campaign in the Basque province of Araba/Álava*.
This week, the first three containers were loaded, and two or three more are expected next week.
For the payment of freight and transport, the Euskadi-Cuba association has received numerous private and collective donations, notably those from the NGO “Reparto Solidario”.
