Solidarity with Cuba grows in northern Italy

by Ed Newman

A solidarity event with Cuba was held Saturday in the city of San Marino di Carpi, in the province of Modena, as part of the numerous activities supporting that country recently held in various regions of northern Italy.

At the event, which took place at the San Marino Sports Center in this town located in the Emilia-Romagna region, several participants in the European Solidarity Convoy that traveled from Italy to Cuba in mid-March shared their experiences.

Also participating were members of the second convoy that arrived on the island at the end of April, who attended the May Day events and delivered humanitarian aid to health and educational centers in eastern Cuba, as well as to communities affected by Hurricane Melissa, which devastated the region in October 2015.

The event was attended by the Consul General of the Caribbean nation in Milan, José Luis Darias, was organized by the Emilia Network for Cuba and the Modena for Cuba Association, which sent another container of aid to the island on May 13th.

The “Henry Reeve Brigade” of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC), based in Crema, Lombardy, also participated in the initiative, contributing a significant shipment of donated medicines.

The president of that Anaic chapter, Fausto Lazzari, thanked “the citizens, associations, and organizations whose generous contributions made possible the successful collection of medicines to address the health emergency in Cuba, a victim of a criminal US blockade for more than sixty years.”

The Lombardy chapter of Anaic also prepared a second container with medical supplies and bicycles last Thursday, which departed for Cuba on Saturday.

Darias, who helped load both containers along with other members of the Cuban consulate, emphasized in statements to Prensa Latina the importance of these aid efforts for his country, which are growing throughout Italy during these difficult times for his people, who are facing an intensification of the aggressive US policy.
