BRICS reaffirms support for Cuba and rejection of injustices worldwide

by Ed Newman

The BRICS foreign ministers, who deliberated for two days here this week, reiterated the need to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.

In the 63-point final declaration of the meeting, the participants expressed their concern about the situation in Cuba and underscored the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace based on mutual respect and non-intervention, reflecting the bloc’s growing support for the island’s demands for sovereignty and justice.

Furthermore, the foreign ministers endorsed a profound reform of the global governance system, including the United Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions, to give a greater voice to developing countries and the Global South.

Regarding the Middle East and North Africa region, they expressed their deep concern about recent developments, and on Palestine and Israel, they reaffirmed the two-state solution, with a viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.

They also condemned the continued Israeli attacks in Gaza, demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and full humanitarian access.

With respect to Lebanon, they called for full compliance with the ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all of its territory, and regarding Syria, they advocated for a peaceful and inclusive political transition without foreign interference.

Furthermore, the participants in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting expressed their grave concern about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and called for a permanent ceasefire.

Finally, they strongly condemned the terrorist attack that occurred in Jammu and Kashmir (India) in April 2025 and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.

The declaration also denounces unilateral coercive measures that violate international law.

Furthermore, through the aforementioned declaration and a results document, they agreed on a common position establishing cooperation in priority areas and on global and regional issues.

Representatives of the member and partner countries of the Global South’s representative organization also agreed to collaborate on issues such as the reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions.

They also agreed to collaborate on trade, industry and finance, artificial intelligence, energy security, climate, biodiversity and sustainability, health, as well as promoting agricultural productivity and ensuring global food and nutritional security.

Likewise, they committed to working together on supply chain resilience, disaster risk reduction, and people-to-people exchanges, which, according to the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, constitute a fundamental priority for the pro tempore presidency of the South Asian nation.

Indian officials asserted that there is a general consensus on the need for the BRICS countries to work decisively to find common ground in order to achieve practical, viable, inclusive, and development-oriented solutions through sustained commitment.

However, they acknowledged the repercussions within the BRICS and for countries of the Global South of the current period of unprecedented geopolitical and economic uncertainty facing the world, marked by conflicts, climate-related risks, technological advancements and associated disruptions, as well as challenges and disruptions in supply chains.
