Supporters of Cuba in Nicaragua demand an end to the U.S. blockade

by Ed Newman

Friends and supporters of Cuba have raised their voices from Nicaragua to demand an end to the blockade policy currently imposed by the United States government against the island.

In the context of the international campaign against this unilateral measure by Washington, those speaking out — through messages shared on social media — expressed their support for the Cuban people, just days before the UN General Assembly is set to vote on a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. siege.

Xavier Díaz-Lacayo highlighted Cuba’s moral strength and the capacity of its people to translate values such as dignity, solidarity, and social commitment into concrete actions in the service of humanity.

He added that Cuba’s historical trajectory serves as an invitation to recognize these principles as the pillars of its conduct, manifested in the defense of human dignity and solidarity among nations.

His message emphasized that, beyond economic pressures, the Cuban experience stands as an example of resistance and commitment to humanitarian causes.

For her part, Julissa Aguirre condemned the policy of economic strangulation and reaffirmed her solidarity with the Caribbean nation, noting that no people should be subjected to sanctions that affect their access to food, healthcare, and development.

Furthermore, she defended the right of the Cuban people to live in peace and to determine their own destiny.

In the same vein, Heydi Marcos maintained that the denunciation of the blockade must remain constant as long as the Cuban people continue to suffer its consequences. He also noted that the restrictive measures limit access to food, medicines, equipment, supplies, and technology, while also hindering the island’s development.

Meanwhile, José León Espinoza expressed his solidarity with the people and government of Cuba ahead of the vote scheduled for October 28 at the UN, and urged Nicaraguans — as well as people around the world — to demand an end to U.S. sanctions.

These statements join other international expressions of solidarity with Cuba and calls to put an end to a policy that Havana considers the primary obstacle to its economic and social development.
