Maritza Arribas
Havana, May 1 (JIT) - Cuba's Yerisbel Miranda and Maritza Arribas will make their debut today in the Continental Chess Championship of the Americas 2025, a tournament in the Mexican city of Oaxtepec that will grant a ticket to the next World Cup.
Maritza (2180 Elo points) could take advantage of that possibility, since her partner in this adventure recently reserved a place in that universal appointment with her triumph in the sub-zonal 2.3.2 tournament held in the Colombian city of Medellin.
The world championship will be held from July 5 to 29 in Batumi, Georgia.
For the Aztec tournament, 63 players from 13 nations registered, and according to the draw published, Yerisbel (2254) will debut with white pieces against the Ecuadorian Kerly Samantha Jaramillo (1841), who is more than 400 Elo points higher, so she should not represent a difficult obstacle.
Maritza should also not face a very demanding match against the local Paulina Velarde (1748), taking into account the inferiority of her rival.
Peru's Fiorella Contreras (2341) is at the top of the pre-qualifying, and among the other favorites who will be competing in the tournament are Argentina's Candela Belén Francisco (2294) and Chile's Javiera Gómez (2252).
