Havana, Jun 14 (RHC) - Cubans Lázaro Álvarez and Erislandy Álvarez retained their World Boxing Association titles and extended their undefeated records as professionals by defeating more experienced opponents in those circuits.
It happened in Buenos Aires, where Alvarez, triple king of the world, raised to nine his successes of that kind by defeating Venezuelan Jose Munoz in a duel of the lightweight division (61.3 kg) that left the latter with 17 wins (15 KO) and four failures.
The also three-time Olympic bronze medalist held the Latin American continental belt with a definition signed six rounds before the limit. He arrived with a 30-27 advantage and combined with effectiveness to provoke a couple of protective counts and the stoppage of the fight.
Erislandy, an Olympic gold medalist in Paris 2014, now has five wins on his record after a 10-round unanimous decision over Brazilian Eduardo Costa Do Nascimento, who was called to the Argentine capital with 12 wins (5 KO) and four knockdowns.
Although the experts expected a more overwhelming performance, the judges gave him the credit in the junior lightweight category (63.6 kg) and the universal subtitle of Tashkent 2023 kept the Latin American continental crown.
