Solidarity with Cuba in Italy during Liberation Day marches

by Ed Newman

Cuban flags and signs of support for the Cuban people waved during marches held today in Italy for Liberation Day, while hundreds of demonstrators reaffirmed their solidarity in Rome, in front of the Cuban Embassy.

Members of dozens of political, social, labor, and youth organizations participated in the demonstrations and the event held in front of the Cuban diplomatic mission, expressing their support for Cuba in the face of increased pressure and threats from U.S. imperialism.

The event highlighted the presence of young members of the Cambiare Rotta and Oposición Estudiantil de Alternativa (OSA) student groups, along with members of the Unión Sindical de Base (USB) and other unions, activists from political forces such as the Red de los Comunistas (Communist Network), and members of the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (Anaic).

At the event, Cuban Ambassador Jorge Luis Cepero expressed his gratitude for the growing expressions of solidarity with his country and its people in Italy and emphasized this display of brotherhood and closeness on such a significant date as the 81st anniversary of the victory against Nazism and Fascism in this European nation.

Marco Papacci, president of Anaic, told Prensa Latina that the ambassador’s words were very moving for those present, “as he reaffirmed the will of the Cuban people and the Cuban Revolution to resist and to win.”

Papaccci explained that the groups participating in the Liberation Day marches decided to pause in front of the Cuban embassy, “because it represents a people who have resisted 65 years of the U.S. blockade, while also embodying the ideals of fighting against injustice and for a better world.”

After the event held in front of the diplomatic mission, the massive demonstration continued through the streets of Rome, also featuring the image of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, as part of the tributes to him in Italy during the centennial of his birth.

Many of the march’s speakers referred to Cuba, to Fidel, and to the example of the Cuban people who remain steadfast in the face of the actions of U.S. imperialism and its lackeys, who are trying to destroy the country through an intensification of the economic blockade and even threats of armed aggression.

In his address during that massive demonstration, Papacci alluded to the historical ties between the Italian Resistance, a key player in the victory against Nazism and Fascism, and the Cuban Revolution, citing as an example the partisan Gino Doné, the only European participant in the historic Granma yacht expedition.

The president of ANAIC reaffirmed what he had stated during the recent march in defense of the Caribbean nation, which took place on April 11th in the streets of Rome, when he said, “Cuba is under attack, but it lives, it resists, and we stand with it, with the Cuban people, with its Revolution.”
