The Martian Association of Cuban Residents in Panama (Amcrp) on Tuesday condemned a demonstration carried out by groups of people in the vicinity of the Cuban embassy, which it described as an act of harassment against the diplomatic mission.
In a statement, the organization rejected that the protesters were carrying flags of the United States and Costa Rica and considered that the actions constitute a provocation and interference against Havana and an impact on Panamanian sovereignty, as they took place in front of an accredited diplomatic headquarters.
The Amcrp recalled that, in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, it is the responsibility of the receiving State to protect diplomatic missions and preserve their tranquility and dignity, which is why it asked the Panamanian authorities to investigate the facts.
Likewise, it supported statements by Panamanian civil society organizations and the National Solidarity Coordinator, contrary to confrontational actions attributed to the Cuban Road to Democracy organization.
The Association also questioned that this group and FundaCuba present themselves as representatives of the seven Panamanian citizens detained on the island since last February for violating the constitutional order, pointing out that relatives of those arrested have publicly distanced themselves from these organizations and have asked that they not speak on behalf of their relatives.
In that sense, he asked the Foreign Ministry and the Panamanian municipal authorities to clarify the origin of the financing of these activities and the reasons why actions against a Cuban diplomatic mission are authorized.
For its part, the Panamanian chapter of the Network in Defense of Humanity also rejected the demonstrations of harassment against the Cuban embassy and questioned the permits granted for their carrying out.
The organization headed by lawyer Gilma Camargo, maintained in a message sent to Prensa Latina that these actions do not represent, in its opinion, the majority sentiment of Panamanian society and called on the Government to avoid an escalation of confrontation that could affect the historical ties between Panama and Cuba.
The Network in Defense of Humanity also attributed links to external interests to the organizers and stated that some of its members have recognized sources of financing related to a Cuban citizen convicted of crimes in Panama.
Both organizations reiterated their defense of the sovereignty and self-determination of Cuba and advocated that Panama preserve its status as a territory of peace and respect the norms of international law and diplomatic relations.
