Cuba warns of humanitarian catastrophe amid threats of U.S. military aggression

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla warned this Wednesday, May 13th, that a US military attack against the island would cause a humanitarian catastrophe and a “bloodbath” with the loss of lives of citizens from both countries.

The foreign minister emphasized that there is no justification or pretext for a powerful nation to attack a small country that poses no threat, noting that such belligerent stances are promoted by politicians who do not expose their own families to armed conflicts.

The foreign minister’s warning comes amid escalating threats and aggression from the Trump administration against the island nation.

Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío previously pointed to a coldly calculated communications strategy by Washington to normalize the threat of aggression against Cuban territory, while maintaining that this strategy “is part of the crime, and those who participate in it would be complicit in the eventual bloodshed.”

The recent offensive by the White House manifested itself through sanctions issued on May 1st, which are extraterritorial in nature and affect national or foreign actors operating in sectors strategic to the Cuban state’s foreign exchange earnings.

These measures have focused on key areas such as energy, finance, and security, including direct sanctions against the Business Administration Group S.A. (GAESA) and the entity Moa Nickel S.A., announced by the United States government on May 7th.

While Washington justifies the recent sanctions by claiming that Cuba represents an unusual threat to its national security, the Cuban government and organizations such as the United Nations (UN) reject this argument, which was also used to intensify the oil blockade since January 29th.

Amid US aggression, Trump recently reiterated in Florida his intention to intervene on the island after completing his negotiations in Iran.
