China reaffirmed its firm support for Cuba on Monday, regardless of changes in the international landscape, marking the 66th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Responding to a question from Prensa Latina, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the country will pursue a path of socialist development suited to its national conditions and firmly support the safeguarding of the national sovereignty of the largest of the Antilles.
Since Cuba and China established diplomatic relations 66 years ago, the friendship between the two countries has been passed down from generation to generation, the spokesperson noted.
Guo detailed that, in recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, the building of a community with a shared future has continued to advance; he also highlighted China’s opposition to foreign interference in the Caribbean nation.
With a present characterized by extensive multisectoral cooperation and mutual support on issues of national interest to both nations, Cuba and China mark the 66th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this September 28.
On September 2, 1960, before a crowd of over a million Cubans, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, urged the country to sever ties with the government of Taiwan in order to establish diplomatic relations with Mao Zedong’s People’s Republic of China.
On September 28 of that year, Cuba became the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to establish such ties with the new China, paving the way for relations between the Asian giant and the rest of the region’s nations.
