Civil society denounces imperialist onslaught against Cuba

by Ed Newman

The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), along with the country’s civil society as a member of this organization, today strongly condemned the increasingly aggressive escalation by the United States government, manifested in the tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade, as well as the intensification of media disinformation campaigns and threats against national sovereignty.

As is customary, representatives of ACNU member organizations, movements, networks, and other social actors raised their voices to denounce the intensified blockade imposed by the U.S. government, an anachronistic and unilateral policy that continues to cause severe damage to the economic and social development of the Cuban nation, directly affecting all sectors of the population.

Norma Goicochea Estenoz, president of the Cuban Association of Nations (ACNU), emphasized at a press conference in Havana that these actions violate fundamental principles of international law, including respect for sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and the right of peoples to self-determination.

She denounced the blatant lies and media campaigns that seek to discredit Cuba on the international stage and justify hostile policies that have been widely rejected by the global community.

Cuban civil society condemns the escalation of US aggression against Cuba and calls on the international community to mobilize against the energy blockade, military threats, and political manipulation against the Cuban Revolution.

Cuba is not and cannot be a threat; it is not an enemy of the United States, nor does it want to be. Therefore, an order for a military attack against our country would be considered a crime against humanity, representatives of various social organizations commented.

The time has come for solidarity with Cuba, which has always been a source of solidarity with everyone, declared those attending the meeting, emphasizing the island’s conviction to neither accept threats nor renounce its sovereignty, after calling for a halt to a supposed aggression that jeopardizes regional and international peace.

The UN Assembly paid special tribute to the work of doctors, nurses, and healthcare technicians for their dedication, resilience, and creative resistance in continuing to provide services to the population amidst resource limitations and difficulties of all kinds caused by the blockade and new energy embargo measures.

In this regard, Cuban civil society reaffirms its commitment to the defense of peace, international cooperation, and multilateralism, while demanding the immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade, in accordance with the repeated resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, Goicochea Estenoz emphasized.

All the purposes and principles enshrined in international law and the UN Charter demonstrate that maintaining the US blockade against the Cuban people is an act of genocide, reiterated the speakers who addressed the impact of US policy on health and other areas related to the well-being of children, youth, and the elderly, as well as people with physical disabilities, for whom it is very difficult to access the resources that would allow for their full social inclusion and quality of life.

Examples were given of the impossibility of acquiring wheelchairs, orthopedic prostheses, Braille devices, and various medical supplies, in addition to the elimination of scientific and technical exchanges with US experts, the denial of travel to events, training, and other activities for research purposes.

“We want to live in peace and have our right to life respected,” the attendees repeated, representing societies of different medical specialties, including oncology, pediatrics, and nephrology.

The UNCITRAL and its member organizations reiterate their solidarity with the Cuban people and their firm commitment to continue denouncing these unjust policies, as well as promoting respectful dialogue and cooperation among nations as a means of resolving differences.

Cuba is not only sanctioned, Cuba is under constant attack, and the UNCITRAL reiterates that the blockade constitutes a massive, flagrant, and systematic violation of the human rights of the entire population, including the rights to life, food, health, and equality, with the aim of promoting a more just and inclusive society.

This hostile policy limits the country’s productive capacity and hinders the acquisition of implements and technologies necessary for food production.

Its negative impact on scientific cooperation, access to medicines and technologies, and the achievement of food and nutritional sovereignty and security was also emphasized.

Lissette Fernández, president of the Cuban Association of Animal Production, referred to the main effects of the U.S. embargo on the agricultural sector and the millions of dollars in losses it causes to state-owned enterprises, cooperatives, and farmers.

She also pointed out the damage caused to the performance of the Association for Food Science and Technology, from fuel shortages and the inability to purchase machinery to the failure to deliver fertilizers.

Actions that seek to undermine the Cuban people’s right to decide their political system were also rejected, and the commitment to building a socialist, prosperous, sustainable, independent, and sovereign homeland was reaffirmed.
